Miscarriage Treatment
In case if the doctor diagnoses a spontaneous abortion or miscarriage, there is little can be done with the aim to prevent it. In case if a woman is miscarrying in an active manner, the doctor does not consider that she has a living pregnancy, and the woman should also be seen by an obstetrician, which may recommend ending the pregnancy. It is possible to undergo a D&C procedure, or further observation may take place to let nature take its course.
If a woman has any kind of a urinary tract infection, then she will have to take antibiotics, which are safe to take in pregnancy.

There are situations, when the mother and her baby have incompatible blood types. The doctor can do a blood test to see whether the woman is Rh negative. In case if the mom’s blood samples show that she is Rh factor negative, she will have to have a shot of low – dose Rhogam medication with the aim of preventing a possible blood type interaction with her baby, which may occur if the baby is Rh positive.

In case if a miscarriage is causing intense feeling of pain of heavy bleeding or if it is taking longer than a woman is comfortable with, then she should consult her doctor about using medicine or D&C procedure with the aim to clear the uterus. It should also be mentioned, that to the health professionals, who can manage miscarriage, an obstetrician, a family medicine doctor, or a certified nurse – midwife can be referred.

In case if a woman has threatened miscarriage, it is when there is vaginal bleeding, but pregnancy tests suggest that the pregnancy is still developing, the woman will be counseled and provided with some instructions about the possibility of a miscarriage. In case if the mouth of her uterus is closed, there is no heavy bleeding, her lab work is normal, and an ultrasound shows that she does not have an ectopic pregnancy, then she may go home after receiving the following instructions:

Resting. A woman will be instructed to temporarily avoid sexual intercourse, which means to have pelvic rest as well as heavy activity. It is also possible that the doctor will recommend having a bed rest; however, in accordance with the researches conducted, bed rest does not prevent miscarriage from happening;

Taking progesterone. It is also possible that a woman will be treated with the hormone progesterone with the aim of helping to maintain her pregnancy. Therefore, it is necessary to point out that treatment like this may serve only to delay miscarriage, and it has not been proven to be effective for miscarriage prevention;

Avoiding nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen. Any pregnant woman should use only acetaminophen, such as Tylenol for nonprescription pain relief;
Watching for the passage of any gray or white material from the vagina;
Returning to the emergency department in case if bleeding and / or cramping worsen, or if fever, dizziness, weakness appear;
Repeating a visit to her doctor for a reexamination in about 48 hours or so.
It is also possible that a woman may have incomplete miscarriage (incomplete spontaneous abortion), when all or some part of the fetal tissue stays in the uterus. In case if the doctor determines that a woman suffers from incomplete miscarriage, there are the following treatment options available:
