Ovary is the name of the female gonad. It is one of a pair of women’s reproductive organs. Ovaries are located in the pelvic area, one on each side of the uterus. Normally, each ovary has the size and the shape of an almond. The ovaries produce eggs as well as female hormones. During each menstrual cycle an egg is released from one of the ovaries and then it travels along a fallopian tube directly to the uterus. Besides, the ovaries are considered to be the main source of female hormones, which act by controlling the development of the female body characteristics, such as body shape, body hair and breasts. Ovaries also regulate the menstrual cycle as well as pregnancy.
