The Pill There are two kinds of hormones, contained in the pill, which stop the ovulation process (the egg releasing process) and make thelining of the uterus thinner. The Advantages of the Pill • The risk of having cancer of the ovary and cancer of the lining of the uterus (endometrial cancer), of breast masses, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease is greatly decreased, when this Method of Contraception is used. • Your menstrual cramps and pain will be weaker; • If you use the Pill as the Method of Contraception, you will loose less blood during the menstrual period, and thus, the risk of having anemia is also lower; • You will possibly get rid of facial hair growth; • You receive the total control over your cycle, so that you may delay your period, if necessary: exams, going to somewhere for a weekend, etc. • Applying Pills will make your periods much shorter.
The Disadvantages of the Pill • Taking Pills does not provide any protection against HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases; • You may not forget to take the Pill • If you use this Method of Contraception, you may suffer from headaches, depression, rapid mood changes, etc. • You need your doctor’s prescription, if you want to get the Pills. • You may have serious complications, like blood clots, though it happens rarely; • Pills are quite expensive; • Using the pills your risk to have cervical cancer (adenocarcinoma of the cervix) increases.
The Patch You can wear one Evra Patch during the period of three weeks, and the fourth week is left for your menstrual cycle to occur. The Patch is the 4,5 cm square, placed on the lower abdomen or buttocks, it delivers both hormones: an estrogen and a progestin, which stop the ovulation process. There are only 3 among 1000 women, who using the Patch correctly and consistently and began pregnant for a year. There is no need to use any backup Contraception Method during the 7 days, when you are not using the Patch.
The Advantages of the Patch • There is no need to remember to take the Pill, and you will not have to interrupt the foreplay to insert use some kind of Contraception; • Your menstrual cramps and pain becomes weaker; • The amount of the menstrual bleeding is lessened and so, the risk of anemia development is lowered; • You will be able to get rid of the facial hair; • You will be able to use the Patches for quite a long period of time, and you will not need to make any intervals.
Disadvantages of the Patch • There is no protection from HIV or from any Sexual Transmitted Disease; • You may have spotting; • You may suffer from headaches, depression, rapid mood changes, etc. • You may have serious complications, like blood clots, though it happens rarely; • The Patch may get detached partially (the risk of it is 2,8 %), completely (the risk of it is 1,8 %); • Your skin may get irritated; • You may be suffering form the skin hyperpigmentation for several months, while using the Patch; • If you are not sure that the Patch is attached, you may have to use some other Method of Contraceptive; • If your Patch is out of date, you will also have to use some other kind of the Contraception; • You need a prescription from the doctor in order to buy the Patch.
Implants The implanon is inserted under your skin of the upper arm. It is a 4 centimeter rod – looking device, with a core of a progestin. You may use the same Implanon up to three years, as the progestin gets released rather slowly. This Contraceptive Method is rather effective, as it stops the ovulation process. None of all the women, who were using the Implanon got pregnant.
The Advantages of the Implants • You have three long years of uninterrupted protection against an unplanned pregnancy; • You may stop using the Implanon, and the earlier usage of it does not affect your ability to become a mother in the future; • There is nothing, you need to insert inside of your vagina, no pills to be taken, etc; • This Contraception Method is extremely effective; • The amount of the menstrual bleeding is lessened and so, the risk of anemia development is lowered; • Pain and cramps during your menstrual period are lower; • You may remove the Implanon any time you wish. The Disadvantages of the Implants • Your period will most likely become irregular; • There is no protection from HIV or from any other Sexually Transmitted Disease; • You may gain much weight while having the Implanon inserted.
Emergency Contraception Emergency contraception method is represented by a pill, which is also called the Morning – After – Pill or the Day – After – Pill. You may use the emergency contraception method if you have already had unprotected sex up to several days after the sexual contact. You may use this contraception if the condom broke, or if you were sexually assaulted. But you are to be aware of the fact that emergency contraception method protects you from the unplanned pregnancy, but it does not protect you from any sexually transmitted disease.
You can use the Morning – After – Pill or the Day – After – Pill during first 72 hours after you had unprotected sex. But remember, the sooner you take it, the more effective will be the result. In general this contraception method is considered to be about 80 % effective. You should not confuse the Morning – After – Pill or the Day – After – Pill with the “Abortion Pills”, the usage of which is mentioned above, as this pill works before the implantation occurred. That is why these pills are considered to be a legal form of an unplanned pregnancy prevention.
The Morning – After – Pill or the Day – After – Pill is safe enough, it has no contraindications, and it is available almost at every drugstore without your doctor’s prescription.
